I am so annoyed.
What, can’t you tell? When I took these pics, all was well – nice pattern, nice tops! I downloaded them into Lightroom, then deleted the photos from the camera card to clear room for my next photoshoot… and somehow, deleted the versions Lightroom was using as well! Did they not properly download? What the heck? I could still see the preview, but when I opened them, it said “Photo is missing!”
I thought about retaking the photos, but the light had changed, and, well, I’m really stubborn. In order to get the slightly-blurry, low-res pictures you see now, I did the following:
- fiddled with Lightroom to get the preview image as big as possible on the screen
- screen-captured each photo- basically, I took a picture of my pictures, which means the resolution is only as good as my screen
- imported the screen-captured .tiff files into iPhoto so I could edit them a bit with it’s sub-par editing tools, because Lightroom had let me edit some and not others
- exported the pictures as jpegs, so that I could…
- collage them in Picmonkey so that each image was smaller and the low-quality wouldn’t be as obvious!
Was it worth it? Nope. But dammit, I got halfway and then there was no turning back!
Now, on to this pattern! It’s the first time I’ve used a Hey June pattern, and overall I’m happy. There are lots of variations, and it’s a HUGE pdf, but happily the instructions tell you what pages to print for each view.
This tank top is the cut-away shoulder view, and I’m really pleased that I can actually wear a normal bra underneath! (That said, it’s a me-made bra with the straps set narrow at the back…) I bought this ITY specifically for trying out this pattern, and cut it with a straight hem so I could use the border print. I rather like the look of the longer hem at the sides, so I might try straightening the hem again!
My second version is the colour-blocked tee. This one is a rayon print with black bamboo sleeves. I think rayon is really ideal for this pattern – something with a lot of drape!
For reference, this is the hem as drafted. It’s curved at front and back, and higher at the sides. I find mine rides back on the shoulders a bit, so I should perhaps consider a forward-shoulder adjustment or FBA… but that seems like too much work for such an easy breezy shape!
Overall, here are my thoughts on the pattern:
Pros:
- lots of variations
- feels modern and fun to wear
- easy to fit and doesn’t take much fabric
- with some length added, it would be a cute trapeze dress (like the Papercut Sway dress, the Groove dress or Heather B’s awesome pattern hack tutorial)
Cons:
- needs good posture or it looks dumpy
- all that volume calls for balance – I went for my tightest skinny jeans and a necklace to break up the uniboob

I recently lost allllllllll my photos [nope, never back up, I’m a Luddite] s my PC crashed and died. Have I backed up anything since? Nope. I don’t learn, it seems. I lost all the process pics of our wedding dresses, and my daughter’s. Of no interest to anyone but me, but hey ho.

I did lose all the footnotes on my thesis the night before its due date – does that count?!!

Cute, cute!! I am a fan of this pattern. Insanely comfortable.
My husband accidentally deleted all of our Australia photos from the camera card (he meant to delete one) while we were traveling, but a quick google search and an article on CNET helped us figure out how to get them back relatively easily. Tip: when you realize what you’ve done, STOP and don’t take more photos, click anything, do anything because it overwrites the deleted photos.

Your card isn’t *really* deleted when you erase it, it only really removes the photos when it’s overwritten with new photos, as Meg said. Next time use EaseUs software (http://www.easeus.com/resource/photo-recovery.htm) to recover the deleted photos from the card. I once copied all my holiday photos over, then updated iPhoto and it erased my ENTIRE photo library. Luckily I back up my machine, so it was just the holiday ones I needed to use EaseUs to recover and it got them all!

Ughh, how annoying! I actually deleted about 4 years of photos a few years back, including some great travel photos. I still haven’t gotten over that one. Anyways, I also just made the santa fe top for the first time and have been thinking about making another but am unsure what I need to change. I felt like my first one came up super large, but I think that was a combo of (a) wishful thinking about my bust size and (b) super thin and drapey rayon. Yours looks like it fits as intended, oversized, but not practically falling off! I think i need to try the tank!

Maybe it’s worth sizing down? My hips are actually 4″ too big for this size, but based on what Meg said after sewing it herself, I figured there was enough room to spare. I think it does need a bit of snugness up top to balance all the volume!

Ok, that is good to know. i think I probably need to size down two. I didn’t want to have to figure out to grade between sizes with the sleeve inserts so I went a size too big in the bust and a size too small in the hips. There is plenty of hip ease so I don’t think sizing down will be an issue. Thanks!

Love your fabric choices for both tops! Gillian, I think we share a fondness for bright print knits — I frequently have the same fabric in my stash that you’ve used for a project :D!
I made the raglan sleeved view of the Sante Fe in some rayon/lycra knit from the stash and it’s extremely cool & comfy. However, on me anyway, the neckline (in spite of carefully stabilizing it) is ridiculously huge. I want to love this top, but unfortunately, I don’t find the style very flattering on my narrow shouldered / extra busty body. I’m going to try all the views before giving up on this pattern though, and am hoping for better luck with the tank version.

I hope you like the tank version better… and maybe size down? The tee neckline isn’t particularly big on me, but I do think the cut on sleeves as drafted aren’t quite right for me. I’ve made another tank that I love, and an ity tee that didn’t turn out so great.

we had a hard drive failure and thought we lost ALL of our photos on our server. It was terrifying. We managed to recover them in the long run, but it was a lesson learned.
Did you look in your computer’s recycle bin. Deleted files go there to live until you empty the bin, so they might still be there!

Gillian, I made View B for the first time this month as well. I ended up removing a wedge of about 2″ from each side to get a drape that better suits my body shape. I’m also thinking I need a a shoulder adjustment as mine also creeps back during the day. I have the fabric lined up for Views D-F, just haven’t gotten to sewing them yet.

Several people have commented that this pattern came up big on them! I’m glad i picked a size based on my bust, not on my hips, or I’d be swimming in it. Are you happy with the amount of volume you ended up with?

Yeah, my mods to the volume gave me a much better shape for me. When I try the dolman view, I’m sure that may need a different mod to the volume. But I’ll see how that goes.

I haven’t lost blog photos, but worse – I’ve lost my daughter’s soccer game photos. Oh yes and there was that roll I lost in “Its a small world” in Disneyland too long ago.

I’ve lost photos – just deleted them off the drive. No idea why or how. Fortunately I’d emailed a few to a family member (photos of the girls in tshirts I’d made) so saved them from my ‘sent’ email pile.

You just need to pay particular attention when importing the photos into Lightroom – if you’re importing from the card you need to select ‘copy’ (which will import them and copy to your computer), or ‘move’ (which will import and move them to your computer). Selecting ‘add’ means that yes they are ‘in’ Lightroom, but it just means they’ve been added to the catalog – their true location (which Lightroom needs if you want to work on them) is still (in this case) – your camera card. A Lightroom catalog (the photos that are ‘in’ Lightroom when you open it) can include photographs on multiple drives and/or in multiple locations. If the drive is not connected you can’t work on the image until you reconnect the drive (unless you’ve built smart previews, but that’s another story). Sorry – just spent a bit of time this week trying to explain to students where their photos actually ‘are’ when they click that import button…. 😉

I once lost six months with of photos which included my brothers wedding and some band photographs that I’d taken over a long weekend festival for over 15 bands. I now back everything up immediately to my PC, two external hard drives and my One Drive before I delete them from my memory card. One bitten…!

I had a complete hard drive crash when my daughter was a toddler and lost all of our photos. All of them! *sigh*
