#SewingDares – It’s back!

**Sewing Dares are now closed.**

Are you ready for #sewingdares? It’s easy and anyone can join in!

Here’s how it works: 

  • Ask for a dare in the comments or on Instagram (I’m @gilliancrafts)
  • Include a link to your blog or sewing-related social media
  • You can give some parameters or leave it wide open
  • I, or someone else, will dig through your blog/social media to get to know you and your sewing style, and think up a sewing dare tailored just for you! Something to take you slightly out of your comfort zone or to help build your wardrobe, but nothing way out in left field.
  • You decide if you want to take on the dare! Blog it or post it, and come back and leave me a link to the finished project so I can include it in a #sewingdares wrap-up post!

And here are the rules: 

  1. Have fun. Stop if it is not fun.
  2. There is no rush – Do your dare whenever you want!
  3. Did I mention to have fun?

I’ve run this #sewingdares challenge a few times in the past, starting waaaaay back in 2013! It’s lots of fun, you just might fall in love with a new kind of project – like Kristin, my very first sewing dare, who I dared to try knitting socks, and is still knitting them 3 years later! That said, I’d never want a sewing dare to hang over your head and feel oppressive, so if you accept a dare but then don’t get around to it, don’t worry! We won’t hold you to it. (Unless you tell us too!)

So, do you dare to dare? Leave a comment below with your blog/social media link asking for a dare, and let the games begin! Dare yourself, dare me, dare each other!

    1. Well, I could dare you to make the next thing on your SWAP… but that would be too easy and maybe a bit dull for you! So instead, I dare you to let each of your kids choose a fabric from your stash that you then have to sew up!

      1. Ohhh good dare! I will accept both -complete the next SWAP (which will get me back on track) and get the boys to select something from the stash….(hummm I even have a box of fabrics that I thought I would sew for the boys!)

          Made myself a dress (on my blog)

          Allowed the boys to select fabric and sew their own presents for their teachers (blog post next week!)

          Next month is KCW (Kids Clothes Week) so then I will sew them something from the stash which they will also get to choose.

  5. I’m liking this ‘dare’ thing.. I haven’t been blogging for very long so not much to see yet.. and I have sooo many projects I have yet to write the blog posts for” I’ve been sewing pretty much all my life and am self taught. I’ve made hats coats and dresses and I’m about to cut out a mans jacket for the first time to try my hand at full on tailoring (taken 2 toiles to get the fitting right!)

    interested to see what you come up with as there is so little to go on 😀

    1. For your dare, I dare you to try out TWO new pants patterns! (Oh, I am evil!) Two patterns, because then there’s twice the chance of one pattern being perfect. Style Arc makes great slim cut trousers, and then maybe something like a flowy loose rayon trouser? Or the Closet Case Files flares, if you feel adventurous?

      1. That is a massive challenge! but maybe the push I need to pick up my Burda trousers again that I abandoned half way through. Might have to wait for the end of the summer though as I’m currently obsessed with hot weather sewing. Which reminds me, I still have some tencel waiting to be sewn up. I’m thinking seamwork moji or true bias hudson. do they count as pants?

Jalie, Sewaholic, Ohh Lulu’s lingerie, In House, Thread Theory… Can you find something new? (If not, a hack of a Canadian pattern you already own!)

    1. Hiya! I always try not to dare people to do things that involve buying a pattern… but I really want to dare you to try a Cashmerette pattern! I really think you’d like them – I’m a big fan. If inspiration (or budget) doesn’t allow, then I dare you to make a tiered ruffled maxi skirt!

      1. Fabulous dare! I’ve made an Appleton Dress, and I’m really pleased with the fit. There will be loads more to come, and I’ll be blogging about it soon.

        I’ve picked up the Washington Dress pattern and Concord T-Shirt too.

    Im a newbie sewer and was wondering if there was any way I could participate without having a blog?

    1. Of course! I only ask for a blog so i can get a sense what people like to sew, and what would be a good dare… but as a newbie, almost anything would work as a dare for you! So, I’ll give you a choice of dares, and you can pick one:
      1. Sew pyjama pants with piping. The Carolyn pyjamas pattern by Closet Case Files is a great one, or Sewholic Tofinos… you could put piping around the pockets, hems, side seams, whatever!
      2. Sew the same top twice in different fabrics, so you can see which works best with the pattern!

      1. Thanks, I do love colors and prints! And a top is something I want to make, I actually started a few but can’t get past the muslin stage as the fit is tough. But I’m probably too perfectionist about it

    1. Ooh, you are prolific! I love your bright topstitching on your Gingers, so I’m gonna dare you to make Ginger flares or Morgan jeans! I think they’d both looks greta with your style!
      edited: Meant to say that if buying a pattern isn’t an option right now, then cropped Gingers for summer would be awesome!

    1. You three are freaking adorable!!!!! I loved looking through your blog. Now what to dare you… OK, since you mentioned in your “about me” page that your sister made up your blog name for a fashion house you planned as kids… I’m going to dare you to make a modern version of whatever would have been your dress outfit as a kid. What did you think was edgy or cool or elegant at, say, 8? And how could you make it modern and awesome now?

    1. You said you desperately need warm tops ini your life – so I dare you to make some kind of cardigan! So many great patterns out there… or hack a tee-pattern into a fitted or waterfall cardi. Go forth and sew cosy!

I’ve spent the last few months sewing my daughter’s wedding dress and the bridesmaids dresses and the groom’s waistcoat and would like to sew for myself now but in all honesty am not quite sure where to start. My skills have improved but I’m still slow compared to everyone I read. I continue to have huge fit issues. Please dare me!! I’m on sewanneuk.blogspot.co.uk (you can see the wedding finery there but I still have a few posts to do)

    1. Wowza, your wedding sewing looks AMAZING! What are you doing criticising yourself? Be proud! For your dare, I’m going to leave it pretty open, because after all that sewing for other people, I think you probably need something enjoyably selfish. So I’m going to dare you to do one of two things: resew a favourite pattern for yourself, or try something completely different, like paper piecing a little quilt block or doing some embroidery as a detail! Keep it simple! 🙂

    1. Oh Gwen! I adore your sketches! You’re quite the daring sewer as it is! I can’t imagine making my own swimsuit! 🙂 Do you do any wovens? Perhaps that’s a good dare for you. Something wearable in a woven!

    2. This one is a no-brainer: I dare you to write a post for the Curvy Sewing Collective! Your activewear is awesome. We’re just wrapping up a month of swimwear, and it’s books really full, but maybe you could do a post of some kind for us later this summer? Could be a pattern review, pattern comparison, technique post, whatever! Pretty please?

    1. Hiya! So, you know that loose sweater/top you wore a lot during Me Made May? I dare you to make the summer-weight cousin to that – something loose, practical, and yet stylish. Doesn’t have to be the same pattern, but something spiritually the same, if that makes sense! 😉

  37. Hello, I would love a dare! I started my blog because I started the 101 things in 1001 days challenge, and one of my ‘things’is to sew something each day for two weeks. So I’m trying to come up with a list of at least 14 things.. But so far I’ve only got 9. So this could be really helpful. I like to sew dresses and have made bags for myself… So I’m not a complete novice at sewing.

  39. Haha sounds fun but fortunately what I do already forces me to make things that I never thought I would. But it’s actually a great feeling when you do so I’m glad you’re getting others to get involved. I’ll have a look at the other blogs anyway.
