Behold, my first jumpsuit! And as I informed my husband when I made this one, I might be wearing a lot of jumpsuits this summer. I”m a year late to this pattern, but I’m in love!
This is a wearable muslin, with no adjustments except shortening the leg. I’m really pleased with how well it fits! Good crotch curve, good neckline. I think next time I’ll cut up a size in the bodice to add more ease in the sleeves and a bit more length so that it blouses at the waist. I used a lightweight rayon, which works well. I think rayon (or bamboo or model) jersey is ideal for this – I can’t imagine it fitting or looking as nice in another fabric!
Speaking of fit… This is one of those garments that can feel frumpy or sexy, depending on one’s confidence that day. Is it classically flattering on my figure? Probably not. But on the other hand, I’ve got a round belly and big bootie not matter what I wear, and it feels radically feminist in a fun way to just wear what I want.
I didn’t love the ties when this pattern was first released… but then I remembered a Japanese shirt I had a decade ago with an open neckline and thick ties that made a bow in the back. I used to love how the bow sat over top of a cardigan and added pizzaz. I’ve decided that the ties are a cool, sexy detail – except that mine got all tangled before I took these photos and I didn’t notice to fix them! Ooops! I think I’ll put beads on the ends of my next version so that they always hang down straight.
As per the instructions, I did the neckline with clear elastic, which seems to be holding it’s shape well… I made the waist channel a bit too skinny, so it has fold-over elastic inside because it’s the only thing that would fit! I burrito-d the bodice to finish the sleeves instead of following instructions, becauseI find it simpler.

Have you come around to jumpsuits yet? I think this is a really lovely intro pattern – looks like a maxi from afar, and the dress is a perfect start for lots of summer looks. I’m looking forward to sewing a few different versions: maxi dress with the tank bodice, romper with the kimono bodice, and who knows what else. I wonder if I can convince my mom or sister to give it a try?

Gillian it’s so cute! I love that material – it’s festive. Great job – I find these very scary to consider sewing yet anyway. You have pants to deal with along with a bodice at the same time. Not yet 🙂

You know, the beauty of these pants is that they are wide (no fitting) and the crotch curve is long enough that it doesn’t have to be precise, either. I thought I’d have to tweak that pattern, but I didn’t!

This is a jazzy jumpsuit! The fit is good on you and it looks great. I made denim dungarees (Marilla’s ‘Roberts’ pattern) but am thinking about making her jumpsuit too.

Love your jumpsuit! I think the vertical print works great to elongate the shape. I’ve made the Sallie maxi dress, but did not dare to go for the jumpsuit because I fear the trouble to go to the bathroom! And I drink a lot of tea, so…

Wow, I have always thought of jumpsuits as being too hard for normal people (i.e not 7 foot tall and a size zero) to pull off but you look bloody fabulous in yours. This looks so comfy but very chic. I love your fabric. This pattern is definitely a keeper. Xx

I think this looks fantastic on you!! I muslined one up, and I found it a tiny bit small in the bodice too – even in my regular CC size. My husband hated it so it never made it past the muslin stage. LOL

I had a few jumpsuits in the 60’s-to-early-70’s. All I can remember is how great they looked and how cold I got when I had to go to the bathroom and completely disrobe to use the toilet. Then there was the problem of what to do with the top part of the ensemble while siting.
