I made it pretty far into winter this year before starting to hate it – I mean, it’s March!
Roads, people. Both these pictures contain roads completely covered in snow.
We had a hail storm Monday, and the biggest storm of the year on Tuesday… the snow that melted away 2 weeks ago is back with a vengeance. I drive through country roads 2 hours a day, which usually means at least some sections where the road is snowed over with just one or maybe two wheel ruts to follow. I’m sick of scraping ice and snow off the car, I’m sick of wearing the same pair of winter boots all day, every day, as I trudge around from school to school, and I’m sick of winter coats and wearing many layers!
Meanwhile, it seems like spring has already started for many of you – and I’m desperately jealous! Instagram is starting to pop up with green grass, cherry blossoms, and cute spring clothes. If you can leave the house right now without pulling on giant insulated boots, then girl, you’ve got it good! (Fellow northern-dwellers, you feel my pain.)

All of which, of course, affects my sewing. I’ve bought beautiful materials for a Clare coat, but OMG, I don’t want to sew for winter. I’ve got a fleece jacket in process for my Dad, but again, warm and insulating is not fun right now. I’ve even got pictures of my latest project ready to go – but ugh, the draped coat I made doesn’t look as elegant and chic as everyone else’s when I’m knee-deep in snow!
Instead, here are the last two fabric purchases I made – notice a colour scheme?
The insane batik-ish ITY is going to be a dress, and the solid rayons just might become Jalie dolman tops – I didn’t love my graphic black and white version at first, but I reach for it a lot!
We’ve got March break (a week’s holiday) in just 5 days – I’m planning to do some spring cleaning and get rid of (or refashion) some old me-mades that are taking up space, and hoping to start sew for spring!

ps. March is supposed to be the last month of the Better Pictures Project, but I’m so out of sorts that I haven’t got the intro post ready yet… I’m thinking I’ll just delay until April when I’m in the mood to experiment with pictures and can do the final month justice!

I can’t agree with you here–in Ohio, we never got proper snow cover that lasted more than 8 hrs, and so I’m jealous of those who did! Snow! where’s my snow?! I love winter, and what with every other week reaching 14 C, we haven’t even had one! I would gladly sew your winter clothing for you.
But I suppose I ought to be happy because I rarely had to shovel the drive, and only slipped on ice once or twice 🙂

I’m so surprised! I picture Ohio getting pretty serious winters, though i guess it depends where in the state you are, too.
One year it would be fun to do a cross-seasonal sewing swap – sew something for someone experiencing the opposite weather! You could sew me a winter coat, and I could make you cute spring dresses… 😛

Honey – I AM SO on your page. Add a bit of sickness into the mix and it’s beyond depressing. At least it’s super sunny here today. I hope you can say the same. I continue to knit (which usually has a winterish vibe to it – though not always). In fact, the thing I just finished (up on blog today) is totally NOT wintery. I know this can’t last much longer. In fact, Scott told me that this week coming up is supposed to be warm and spring-like. Of course, when it goes back to hideous over March break (I have no intell – I swear! just guessing) we can commiserate again. xo

I KNEW you would feel my pain! Even though I can tell the days are much brighter now, it’s not quite enough to make up for the endless snow and slush. This week IS supposed to be really warm though, so I’ve just spent an hour packing away my winter clothes, getting out some brighter spring-ish dresses, AND (you’ll be so proud) packing up 3 big bags of clothes to donate! Time to admit I’m not going to lose 3″ on my hips and pass those clothes from 4 years ago on to someone else.

I’m commiserating! It’s been white in northern Alberta since November, and I can’t sew sweaters even though I would still wear them, so I’m sewing dressier tops for the office!
One blessing, it’s been an exceptionally mild winter (we’re stoked to see -10’C around here), so lots of winter sports around here!

Oh, poor girl. I feel the same way in the summer but right now in PHoenix it’s glorious. I love your photo blogs and can’t wait until the next one in April.

Thank you for reminding me that too much hot weather can be just as bad (or worse!) than too much cold! I spent some time in India during the summer, and holy hells it was outrageously hot. Dry heat or wet heat, it was all too much!

In Scotland it’s cold! Its not as awful as the weather you’re having but its bleak. I always think after so many months of winter, do I really go out the house with no socks on, in sandals, or leave, just carrying a cardigan!? Ahh well, hopefully it’ll change soon

Although I l generally like winter, I’m done with it this year. February brought an insane amount of snow to Ottawa, interspersed with freezing rain. I’ve been coughing and wheezing since mid-Jan, which hasn’t helped my mood. No energy to do any crafting. However, we’re going to Mexico in just over a week and forecast is hot and sunny. Will definitely help me re-charge.

Still a fellow northern-dweller but winter seems to have skipped Boston almost entirely this year (makes for one sad Canadian!). I believe the temperature is supposed to hit 20 degrees here this coming week. The goal is not to make you jealous but instead to tempt you come visit Boston over March break!

Yeah, I’m ready for spring too! Our winter was actually quite mild, with basically zero snow, so why prolong these chilly temps? Ready for something a little warmer! I didn’t make it through my winter sewing list, but like you, I’ve lost interest in it. On to Spring!

I just spent a very happy hour packing up my winter clothes and putting out some spring ones! Because if I change how I dress, maybe the weather will magically change too? #logic

Well, I’ve been futzing about for the past few months, so I have a lot of sweater knits and wool flannel to sew up and wear before I have to put them away. Although I managed to wear flannel pjs into July last year (slight mistake on that one, yes),
And I know you don’t want to hear this, but there will be snowstorm in April. Because there’s always a snowstorm in April. Keep something out!

Ugh, you are so right. There IS always snow in April – and if there is snow once in Toronto, there will be snow 10 times up where I work… but fear not, my spring wardrobe is just as warm as my winter wardrobe, it’s just slightly brighter. Snow boots and winter coats will not get packed away yet! 😉

I’m with you! I’m dreaming of spring and sandals and cotton dresses and my bike! But since I’ll be in tights, with and without winter boots, for at least another two months I should keep sewing the winter stuff.

Oh dear. I’m afraid you have had all our Albertan snow. We have had such a mild winter this year – I don’t think we had any snow in February – pretty much unheard of in these parts. Sew for Spring though – it really isn’t that far off!

Here on the most Southern tip of Africa, I am wishing it would turn to winter now, because I am sick and tired of constantly being sticky and sweaty. What I am dreaming of is that I could stay at home every day and just be a catmom and sew!

While my weather here in CO (40-60 at the moment) seems enviable now, no doubt I think I will be desperately green towards the end of summer when your weather turns reasonable and we’re still fighting off the 80s in September. I’m dreaming of sewing sewing sewing which is hilarious given that I’ve got just a couple more weeks to go before this baby. I think I will pick up SImplicity 2369–an oldie but goodie that is super nursing friendly and fits me at any number of sizes (gotta love ITY for that reason), and I’d like to have a few more sleep bras.

You sound like I did this time last year…except that I was having a tantrum every time I saw even one of those white things fall from the sky…. I began to just ignore the snow and refused to shovel it… Some of us Maritimers are still traumatized! 130 cm of snow in Halifax, just in the month of February was too much! This year has been much milder and I had a reprieve with a trip south….which meant that I had to sewing summer things. It felt so good!! I suggest going ahead with your spring and summer sewing plans…it will be here and then you will be totally ready!

Well, the prairies have finally had a mild winter thanks to El Niño . I’m grateful !! I’m looking forward to less layers and sewing some Briar tshirts and Jade skirts for spring. Speaking of this, what fabric stores do you find the best knits at in Toronto? Where do you find the nicest bamboo fabric?

We just had our first real Spring day in NY and I have to say, I was loving it! I kinda forgot what it felt like to be warm while outside, haha! This winter I realized I might be a three season garment sewer. I really have no desire to sew winter clothes or work with winter weight fabrics. At all. Maybe I’m destined to be a knitter and a quilter from November to March and save the rest of the year for garment sewing. Then I can stop making myself feel guilty for not sewing my own goose down tundra parka lol!

I wish that we had had snow as deep as the stuff you have been getting this year. It has been freezing cold in Scotland but not very snowy. Actually the weather was great last weekend but odd. Sunday morning I was sipping tea in my PJs (no coat) in the garden basking in the sunshine and warmth, then an hour later on the way to Edinburgh it was snowing and the temperature plummeted. Very strange. I don’t even have any daffodils yet. Loving your fabrics but I must be influenced by the cold as I am only sewing patchwork blocks. I have looking though a big bag of vintage patterns tonight and am dreaming of a summer dress like that will ever happen. 🙂 Xx
