The Comino Cap was my favourite pattern of the summer, so it’s no surprise that I’ve made a more autumnal version! I got this lovely viscose jersey at a different branch of my local chain store yesterday. It was on for “Buy 1 for $15, get two free!” so i snapped up 2m each of three prints for only $30! Yippee!!! I”m sure those will be making appearance soon.
Isn’t the fabric nice? It’s right up my alley, at least!
The top of the dress is exactly as drafted… I thought about extending the cap sleeve into a long sleeve, but in the end I didn’t have enough fabric. That’s ok – these little sleeves play nicely under a cardigan, which is crucial for cold weather. I did add a contrast waistband to the pattern, which I sewed very carefully to make sure it actually came out an even width all around for once!
The skirt is where the fun happens! For some reason the print was giving me a country vibe, so I decided to play it up with a bit of a ruffle. Sorry for accidentally ignoring your advice, Instagram! I cut a 3″ wide stripe that was about 2x the width of the hem, and gathered it with a basting stitch. I pined it so that a bit of the normal skirt would show underneath, and zigzagged it on. I did the zigzagging twice just to make sure it was secure.
Look how fun and flippy the ruffle makes the hem! It give some added weight which is good with a fairly light jersey like this, and makes the skirt hang nicely… plus is swishes as I walk. I want ruffles on everything now! (Don’t worry, I won’t… not *everything*, at least!) 
Of course, I had to wear my much-loved sneaker/cowboy boots. I wore these things til the sole nearly wore through a few years ago, so now they only come out on special occasions. The leggings are new though – had to replace a pair of RTW ones that were springing holes in the back thigh. Yikes – guess that’s the sign of threadbare jersey!
Oh, and check out my new organization system for taking pics outside! I usually just go 20m of so down the street, so I don’t bring a purse… but then where do I put my stuff? Today I grabbed a plastic bin that was waiting to be taken to school and used it to carry all my bits and pieces: lens cap, camera remote, phone, prop sweater I didn’t use, and keys so I could get back into the apartment! It made it much easier knowing that all my stuff was together and not going to get lost while I took pics. Hurray!

I have to admit that I was on the non-ruffle camp on Instagram but I was totally wrong! It’s gorgeous! You’re having such nice autumnal colours in the background! And I’m always in awe for people who dare to venture outside of their house/garden to take pictures. I’m still too scared to do it 🙂 But the plastic bin idea is great! I always have to put my stuff on the ground which isn’t ideal.

I’ve been trying to go outside a bit more while the weather is nice.. because in a month or so more, it’ll be all-indoor, all-the-time! i did have some elderly people talk to me while I was taking these pics, but they seemed to figure I was doing an autumn portrait or something? I feel silly out there with my tripod, but I can ignore it! 🙂

Great organisation for taking your pictures. I venture outside with my hubby but I’m still to shy to take pictures outside with my tripod.
I haven’t starting sewing for the new season but as most of the dresses I made this summer have 3/4 lengh sleeves, I’ll wore them for this autumn.

I like having my husband take pics, and he does well, but I end up feeling stressed to make it quick! I kind of like using the tripod because I can retake all the basic poses with different exposure levels to make sure at least some turn out!

Great dress in a great print! I voted against a ruffle originally because I thought you were asking about doing a contrast ruffle in black to match the waistband. But I really like THIS ruffle. =)

Ooh I love it! I really like how you attached the ruffle above which makes it look like a double ruffle without the work. Super cute fabric and dress modification.
