Autumn Comino Cap

Autumn Comino Cap

The Comino Cap was my favourite pattern of the summer, so it’s no surprise that I’ve made a more autumnal version! I got this lovely viscose jersey at a different branch of my local chain store yesterday. It was on for “Buy 1 for $15, get two free!” so i snapped up 2m each of three prints for only $30! Yippee!!! I”m sure those will be making appearance soon.

Isn’t the fabric nice? It’s right up my alley, at least!

The top of the dress is exactly as drafted… I thought about extending the cap sleeve into a long sleeve, but in the end I didn’t have enough fabric. That’s ok – these little sleeves play nicely under a cardigan, which is crucial for cold weather. I did add a contrast waistband to the pattern, which I sewed very carefully to make sure it actually came out an even width all around for once!

The skirt is where the fun happens! For some reason the print was giving me a country vibe, so I decided to play it up with a bit of a ruffle. Sorry for accidentally ignoring your advice, Instagram! I cut a 3″ wide stripe that was about 2x the width of the hem, and gathered it with a basting stitch. I pined it so that a bit of the normal skirt would show underneath, and zigzagged it on. I did the zigzagging twice just to make sure it was secure.

Look how fun and flippy the ruffle makes the hem! It give some added weight which is good with a fairly light jersey like this, and makes the skirt hang nicely… plus is swishes as I walk. I want ruffles on everything now! (Don’t worry, I won’t… not *everything*, at least!) Autumn Comino Cap

Of course, I had to wear my much-loved sneaker/cowboy boots. I wore these things til the sole nearly wore through a few years ago, so now they only come out on special occasions. The leggings are new though – had to replace a pair of RTW ones that were springing holes in the back thigh. Yikes – guess that’s the sign of threadbare jersey!

Oh, and check out my new organization system for taking pics outside! I usually just go 20m of so down the street, so I don’t bring a purse… but then where do I put my stuff? Today I grabbed a plastic bin that was waiting to be taken to school and used it to carry all my bits and pieces: lens cap, camera remote, phone, prop sweater I didn’t use, and keys so I could get back into the apartment! It made it much easier knowing that all my stuff was together and not going to get lost while I took pics. Hurray!

Have you started any sewing for the new season?

  1. I have to admit that I was on the non-ruffle camp on Instagram but I was totally wrong! It’s gorgeous! You’re having such nice autumnal colours in the background! And I’m always in awe for people who dare to venture outside of their house/garden to take pictures. I’m still too scared to do it 🙂 But the plastic bin idea is great! I always have to put my stuff on the ground which isn’t ideal.

    1. Thank you! I’ve been trying to go outside a bit more while the weather is nice.. because in a month or so more, it’ll be all-indoor, all-the-time! i did have some elderly people talk to me while I was taking these pics, but they seemed to figure I was doing an autumn portrait or something? I feel silly out there with my tripod, but I can ignore it! 🙂

  2. Gillian, this dress is gorgeous on you. Beautiful photos too! The burnt orange in the fabric perfectly matches the leaves in the background… wow. 🙂 Well done all around – and I love the ruffle!

    1. I was happy to find that red-orange tree not too far down the street! I love this part of fall, however brief! 🙂

  3. I was too in the non-ruffle camp but I love the dress with the ruffles ! The dress is really great on you !
Great organisation for taking your pictures. I venture outside with my hubby but I’m still to shy to take pictures outside with my tripod.
I haven’t starting sewing for the new season but as most of the dresses I made this summer have 3/4 lengh sleeves, I’ll wore them for this autumn.

    1. I like having my husband take pics, and he does well, but I end up feeling stressed to make it quick! I kind of like using the tripod because I can retake all the basic poses with different exposure levels to make sure at least some turn out!

  4. Nice print!! Wow, I’m stuck on the fact that you bought the fabric one day and are wearing the dress the next! Amazing. Your pictures are beautiful too. i really need to get a remote for my camera….

  5. Great dress in a great print! I voted against a ruffle originally because I thought you were asking about doing a contrast ruffle in black to match the waistband. But I really like THIS ruffle. =)

    1. I definitely should have been more specific about the ruffle plan when i first proposed it – but glad it worked out in the end! 😉

  6. Wow – this is FANTASTIC. My fave thing you’ve made all year. Terrific fabric. Love the ruffle. Perfect for the weather. Great with the boots. All in, a win!

    1. Thanks! I agree – it would have been a little dull without the ruffle! Plus now it’s so much more fun to wear…

  7. Cute! I think the ruffle was a good idea, it gives the dress a little extra “something”. 🙂 And that fabric is fantastic! I wish I could find something like that, except maybe in a teal colorway…

  8. I was in the non-ruffle camp, but I really like how you’ve done the ruffle. It’s much nicer than it just being added onto the bottom of the hem. The fabric is fantastic too.

    1. I probably would have followed everyone’s advice if I’d check IG, but I was too busy sewing a ruffle on! 😉

  9. I’m so glad you ignored instagram and went with the ruffle. It adds a nice bit of something! This fabric is so great on you – the colours are perfectly fall. I’m torn between making spring things and thinking about Christmas which will be in winter so my sewing has become paralysed with indecision!

  10. You had me at the ruffle. Seriously.

I pink puffy heart this dress! It is so cute and flirty and looks terrific on you! I have been madly sewing for fall but waiting on the weather to *finally* cool down enough to wear my makes.

  11. Ooh I love it! I really like how you attached the ruffle above which makes it look like a double ruffle without the work. Super cute fabric and dress modification.
I have done some fall sewing and because of a contest even managed some winter pieces. I’ve got a few more on my list though as time allows.

  12. So pretty. I’m also glad you ignored the no-ruffle advice. And I love the fall photos. I need to finish one of my PIPs soon so I can take similar shots.

    1. This time of year is so nuts! Each week feels like a month, and it’s so hard to find time for sewing, let alone pics and posts!

  13. Wait!!! Did you say you bought the fabric day1, sewed day2 and posted pictures day3? 😮 I think I’m going to faint!

Gorgeous dress!!! And the colours are lovely. Cap sleeves look so good on you. Is that a half circle skirt or a-line?

And Is that Fabricland that’s having this sale? I want to go check it out. 🙂

    1. Yes! I did get the fabric from Fabricland – they didn’t have this fabric at my local Guelph store, but I found it in Hamilton!

  15. Ah, I am a closet ruffle lover! Ok, maybe not in the closet anymore since I seem to have been making things with ruffles a lot lately. I love how you placed the ruffle. Very cool! Love the fabric, too.

    1. Ruffles always seem a bit time consuming to me… but I do like the effect! It’s nice to be able to add some interest without needing a contrast fabric!

  16. I love the ruffle, it looks great. I said it looked perfect as it was on Instagram, but this looks better! The colours in the dress are great, so autumny, and I love the photos!!

  17. Yay for swishy skirts! The ruffle really does add a nice touch. 🙂 Love the shoes. Can you maybe get them re-soled? I did that to a pair of my favorite boots last year, and while it wasn’t cheap (about 40€ in total) it was totally worth avoiding the hassle of finding a new pair of boots… 😉

  18. This is so cute! I keep going back and forth on this pattern because I already have the Lady Skater and it seems so similar… but all of your versions keep making me want to buy it! I really love a cap sleeve. What to do, what to do….
